Bell Group Win Johnstones Community Spirit Award

We are delighted to have been awarded the Johnstones Community Spirit award for our work with the ACANE Community Centre in the Byker Wall Estate in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.

ACANE (African Community Advice North East) provides support to African refugees and asylum seekers living in the North East of England. The service provides advocacy, information and advice, operates a drop in service and runs occasional activities and training courses at weekends.

Over a thirteen year period, ACANE had unsuccessfully applied for funding to refurbish their Community Centre and the building sat in a state of disrepair. Bell Group, recognising the important role that ACANE plays within Byker and the wider community, were eager to lend their services to this unique rejuvenation project.

Externally new signage has been provided to raise awareness within the local community to the services and location of the centre. This has been coupled with a new aesthetic for the front elevation with anti-graffiti clean off and pigeon deterrents installed to promote a warm friendly welcome to the centre.

Internally the centre has undergone joinery repairs prior to a full redecoration and re-carpeting of the hall and office. ACANE now boasts a clean, fresh and vibrant feel, which matches the friendliness and exuberance of the staff and users of the facility.
