Ensuring the safety of shipping and the well being of sea farers has been the responsibility of Trinity House since they were granted a Charter by Henry VIII in 1514.

Project Work

The lighthouse presented two different challenges. Firstly the job involved stripping all the old lead based paint from the inside of the tower. That involved developing not only ingenious ways of ensuring the safety of the operators in dealing with the material, but also ensuring the safe disposal of the hazardous waste. Secondly the job was carried out in February when sea conditions were not ideal, so close project management skills had to be deployed to ensure that the job was completed to the client’s satisfaction.

The specification called for a two pack epoxy finish to be applied to the masonry, with all the metalwork around the lantern and store to be treated also. In order to gain access to the tower a boson’s chair had to be rigged and therefore prime weather conditions had to be present to ensure safety.

This was a high profile contract involving the refurbishment and redecoration of the ornamental railings that surround the gardened area where the statue of William Wallace is situated. The location of the works posed a number of problems that had to be overcome; not least the fact that it is an extremely busy part of the city being that it is in central Aberdeen opposite his majesties theatre. To tackle these problems, we introduced innovative methods of encapsulating the works in conjunction with appropriate pedestrian traffic management this ensuring public safety at all times. We used experienced and steady handed craftsmen to carry out the works.
